A deeper kind of funny

  1. 2+2=5 - For extremely large values of 2

This is on a shirt I own. It is funnier to a person who has taken Numerical Analysis than it is to the rest of the world.

  2. Why did Mozart get rid of all of his chickens?
Because they kept saying "Bach, Bach, Bach"

This is from the Baby Bach video in the Baby Einstein collection. It is funnier to a person who has taken second year music theory than to the rest of the world.

  3. (Integral of) 1/(cabin)

This is from my title bar at the top of my blog. It is funnier to a person who has taken second semester calculus than to the rest of the world.

  4. This is yesterday's Foxtrot. It is funnier to a computer scientist than to the rest of the world. I had to email Mr. Amend personally to thank him for this one. Obviously he wrote it for me.

  1. I want to see who gets my sense of humor.... Try explaining any of them to me.... This will also show if anybody besides my wife and Sarah John are still blogging :)

  2. :(

    So, the punchlines...

    1) Numerical Analysis is the study of how close is "close enough." For example, landing rockets on Mars, pi needs to have amore accurate value than 3.14. So, depending on your accuracy level, it is possible that 2+2=5.

    2) Mozart did not believe that Bach's music theory rules were true. Many of his compositions are contradictions of Bach's rules and still sound really nice. Many of his contemporaries refused to appreciate his musical abilities solely because he didn't follow Bach's rules, therefore his music must be awful.

    3) The integral of 1/x is log x. So, the integral of 1/(cabin) would be log cabin - plus the constant of integration (C). Log cabin + C would be a houseboat.

    4) Use the following ASCII chart to look for the "alpha bytes":
    A 65 01000001
    B 66 01000010
    C 67 01000011
    D 68 01000100
    E 69 01000101
    F 70 01000110
    G 71 01000111
    H 72 01001000
    I 73 01001001
    J 74 01001010
    K 75 01001011
    L 76 01001100
    M 77 01001101
    N 78 01001110
    O 79 01001111
    P 80 01010000
    Q 81 01010001
    R 82 01010010
    S 83 01010011
    T 84 01010100
    U 85 01010101
    V 86 01010110
    W 87 01010111
    X 88 01011000
    Y 89 01011001
    Z 90 01011010

    (Yes, yes I am...)

  3. i read your blog! i used to check it every couple of days... but then there was that 3-week dry spell... hee hee.

so i got the mozart and the foxtrot, and although i haven't taken numerical analysis, going through 4 yrs of chem, physics, bio etc. in college has given me an overdeveloped sense of significant digits, precision and accuracy etc, so i laughed at the first one too.

The only one i was clueless about was the log cabin; i never did get to take calc- one of my greatest academic regrets. (seriously) knowing now that you've explained it, it is hysterially funny.

i want a log cabin. not so keen on a houseboat, but a nice log cabin, in the woods of course- i'd take that in a heartbeat.

  4. But... did you see which "Alpha Bytes" are in the bowl?
